Hello!

Welcome to Eat Well, Travel Often. I use this space to document my travels and hope you are inspired to get up and move!

Out of Touch

Out of Touch

We're never really ready for what will happen when we say goodbye to something.  A loved one, our home, or in this case our lifeline, photo book and record collection all in one - the computer. Whether you can't live without your cellphone, tablet or notebook...they're really one in the same.  Each one allows us to connect to the world in a way vastly different from our parents' childhoods. While we hate to admit that we can't find our way without Google maps, can't fully start the day until we check every social media aspect or couldn't possibly survive without our calendars (what time do I have to be at work?) we are in fact addicted.

Today I say goodbye to a long-term friend, co-worker, and DJ: my beautiful MacBook.  Whether this is a permanent goodbye our a "see you soon" I won't know for several weeks.

My initial reaction was "omg my pictures"!! As you know I've snapped a few photos of Thailand here and there the last few months and trust me...there are more where that came from.  But why did my life feel as though it were over? Am I suffering from short term memory loss where I can't remember what the beautiful beaches or my friends' faces look like?  Of course not, but I still had a slight panic attack.

Would I never be able to hear music again now that my 10 year music collection of 15,000+ songs may never fully return to its glory?  Don't be silly.

How could I possibly get my work done as a teacher?! Oh, right, people have been doing this job for years without an ounce of technology.

But that moment of silliness overwhelmed me and I held onto my laptop at the IT shop as they told me it'd be heading to Bangkok for several weeks with no promise of returning.  It's not the end of the world and I took a feel breath and handed it over.  The memories I've made will stick with me for years to come, I can finally filter out the Aaron Carter from my iTunes and I suppose I can work on a desktop for a while.

I have all this extra free time now that doesn't need to be filled with technology every minute of the day.  I guess I can start reading more...thank God for this Kindle Fire.  Huh? What's a book?

Happy New Year!
